First They Killed My Father (CIFF)

Angelina Jolie directs the Khmer movie based on Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung's memoir of the same name. The story follows Loung as a 5-year-old, one of the seven children of a high-ranking government official. When the Khmer Rouge storms into Phnom Penh in April 1975, Loung's family flees their home and moves from village to village to hide their identity, forcing them to eventually disperse to survive. Given her resilience and determination, Loung is sent to be trained as a child soldier in a work camp for orphans while her siblings are sent to labour camps.
